VIC - DIMBOOLA - LITTLE DESERT's Gateway
Nestled against the Wimmera river Dimboola township is a real pioneer town steeped in history!Once an ancient inland sea millions of years ago. The Wimmera River borders this desert 'An Oasis'.
Aboriginal History is seen along the banks as many midden sites are clearly visible. The Aboriginals (Wotjobaluk) camped along the river which was a good food supply and the waters safe for swimming. Canoe trees are also found along it's banks.
The Little Desert boasts, 'a taste of the outback' with Kangaroos and Emus seen while camping, swimming or having a BBQ at Horseshoe Bend. 4-wheel drive along the desert tracks, or stroll along the river bank and be absorbed by wondrous sounds of the wildlife.
You can even camp at one of the many bush campsite with Oasis Desert Adventures and Pomponderoo Bush Retreats and get a guided tour of the bush by an experienced guide.
Extensive 50 year old Olive groves border the Little Desert and recent developments on the edge of the town produce some of the purest Extra Virgin Olive Oil in Australia by The Australian Pure Olive Oil Company
Dimboola is home to the play ‘Dimboola’. The story is based on an actual wedding held in Dimboola many years ago, now a famous stage play! The play is well known throughout Australia and also performed in London.
A film was also made in Dimboola which included town folk and many now famous actors in Australia.
Dimboola township boasted a jewellery store, a Chinese owned market garden, a timber merchant, two hotels, a dispensary store and a general store the antique and craft stores attract many visitors.
