QLD - MARREE - Start of the Oodnadatta Track
Marree is the Australian outback's....the start of the Oodnadatta Track and the finsh of the Birdsville Track....This small town is ideally situated close to Lake Eyre and a diverse range of Outback eco-systems.
No one just drives through Marree if you make there you will enjoy the stop, to get food, fuel, a cold beer and the accommodation in the heritage pub is hard to resist.
Marree was originally a settlement known as Hergott Springs named after the springs nearby and that it was the main stop over for the Ghan Railways line, the relics of the old Ghan sit on the almost forgotten, last pieces of track left. And there are poignant reminders of the now-forgotten Afghan Camel Train trade.
Marree has a remarkable history and is definitely a unique place to experience. This small town sits in the middle of nowhere with its 120year old pub still catering to travellers as though nothing has changed.
Marree certainly gives a feel of an enduring and unbeatable permanence in this modern world of 'here today and gone tomorrow!'
