Mount Morgan is world renown for once being the richest single mountain of gold on earth!



The Mount Morgan township is steeped in history that is still apparent today with not a single neon signs nor McDonald's in sight.

The character of the town has changed little over the years. The old houses and even the main street have the appearance of a bygone era.

Even the Bell outside the Scouts Hall, has a unique origin. The Mafeking Bell was cast at the Mt Morgan mine from English pennies donated by the local children to celebrate the saving of Mafeking by Lord Baden-Powell.

The 100 year old heritage railway station and one of three Hunslett industrial locomotives built in England in 1904 still running on the original railway line from Rockhampton to the Dawson Valley.

This is a popular scenic trip, past old mine dumps, through a tunnel and twice crosses the Dee River before reaching the old railway siding of Kenbula. (Aboriginal for iron bark trees).

Horse and cart, gold panning and fossicking are the the unique experiences sort by many today.

Between Mt Morgan and nearby Biloela, is the Mt Morgan cemetery with the Chinese 'Heung Lew' (incense burner). It is one of only three remaining in Australia and was an essential part of the Chinese funeral ritual. Much of Mt Morgan's fascinating history is revealed at the cemetery.

Mt Morgan is an ancient area where dinosaur footprints were discovered in 1953 and can still be seen today. The caves are also home to a large colony of bent-wing bats.

The Tipperary Flat suspension bridge was constructed in the 1890's so the Irish miners could get to work when the Dee River was in flood.
