NSW - CABONNE COUNTRY - Australia's Food Basket

Cabonne Country is located in the heart of Explorer Country in the Central West of NSW.

So... What exactly is Cabonne Country?

Pronounced Ku-bon, the Council derived its name when three shires in the area amalgamated. A name was needed that did not give any bias to any of these areas and so the name 'Cabonne' was chosen, an aboriginal word meaning large. Cabonne extends from Eugowra, in the west, the site of Australia's biggest & most famous gold robbery at Escort Rock by Frank Gardiner, through to Ophir, where Australia's first gold rush was, in the East. From the south of Canowindra, the ballooning Capital of Australia, a town full of historic pubs, antiques and wine, and to the north is the village of Yeoval, the childhood home of Banjo Paterson, one of Australia's most famous poets.

Australia's Food basket, Cabonne Country produces a spectacular variety of foods. Dairy products, beef, lamb, venison, apples, berries, canola oil, wine, spring water, flour, eggs, and honey are just some of the products that hail from Cabonne Country.

Cabonne Country also produces a spectacular variety of wines which can be sourced from local outlets and major chains throughout Australia. Cabonne is in the unique position of having within its boundaries two distinct wine regions. The Cowra Wine region, of which Canowindra is a part, is a hot climate wine region famous for its magnificent golden chardonnays. The Orange Wine Region, high on the slopes of Mt Canobolas, is a cool climate region which produces superb red varieties. What ever your taste there's certainly something to fit.

Cabonne is the host of major festivals, including the annual Cabonne Country Week held in spring, where the villages comes to together and displays their array of food & wine. In late autumn/winter, the Tour de Cabonne where famous and infamous bike riders tour the shire in a grand style. In April the Internationally acclaimed Marti's Canowindra Balloon Fiesta swells the township of Canowindra to its limits!

Home to many natural wonders, Cabonne has something to offer everyone. Including the magnificent Mt Canobolas – the highest point west until Africa!, Borenore Caves, a 350 million year old fish fossil find and now museum in Canowindra, three National Parks, and endless amounts of bushranger history.
