NSW - HORNSBY - THE GATEWAY TO THE MAGNIFICENT HAWKESBURY RIVER.
The conservation of Hornsby Shire's Aboriginal and European heritage is important and a number of strategies to assist this being achieved.
There are still a number of significant remnants of Aboriginal culture which stand as memorials to their long association with this country. These include:
Engravings on sandstone ridges;
Rock shelters on the valley slopes containing cave paintings or drawing sites and archaeological deposits;
Open campsites and grinding grooves on valley floors;
Shell middens along tidal waterways; and scarred trees.
Today Hornsby is reknown for its scenic bushland and magnificent Hawkesbury River. With a wide variety of national parks and bushland areas it is truly a bushwalker's paradise.
Hornsby is also the centre of The Hill's eastern region. The huge Westfield shopping development is Australia's largest featuring a unique bronze sculpture known as the Hornsby Water Sculpture.
In the western rural areas of the Hornsby shire the tiny towns of Galston and Dural with a myraid of nurseries, fruit orchards, hobby farms and craft and antique stores. Roadside stalls offer a variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers sold direct from the growers.
